MAGIC

The Curriculum & Resource Teachers Guide tells us that the "exclusion, expulsion and incarceration of Japanese-Americans was NOT justified by military necessity", that the decision was based on "race prejudice, war hysteria
"And a failure of political leadership".
"Military necessity" it certainly was to President Roosevelt , his top advisors and all branches of the military, as only they had full access to America's greatest intelligence feats, the breaking of Japan's highest level diplomatic and espionage codes and ciphers -in 1940……… cover name MAGIC.
The cumulative total of this intelligence revealed to the President and his key advisors the specter of subversive nets up and down the west coast, controlled by the Japanese government, utilizing large numbers of local Japanese residents, designed to operate in a wartime environment.

Below are excerpts from a few of the many MAGIC messages pertaining to Japans contact with U.S. west coast Japs :

May 19,1941, from Los Angeles (Nakauchi) to Tokyo………"We have already established contact with absolutely reliable Japanese in San Pedro and San Diego area, who will keep close watch on all shipments of airplanes and other war material………..we shall maintain connection with our second generations who are at present in U.S. Army………to keep us informed of various developments in the army. We also have connections with our second generations working in aircraft plants for intelligence purposes."

May 11,1941, from Seattle (Sato) to Tokyo: "For the future we have made arrangements to collect intelligence from second generation draftees on matters dealing with troops".

May 19,1941, from Washington to Tokyo: "……..so that we may have funds with which to carry on intelligence work in the emergency created by America's entry into the war…………for this purpose we assume that Japanese-American relations will continue as at the present."

Jan 23,1942, from Tokyo to Lima : "The brilliant success of our armed forces at Pearl Harbor was due, mainly, to the military information based on reports sent by our informers on the spot, whose efforts represent untold sacrifices in blood and tears."

Feb 12,1942………cover memo from Br.Gen. Mark Clark to Assistant Secretary of War John J. McCloy: subject-enemy aliens on the west coast: "Their espionage net containing Japanese aliens, first and second generation Japanese and other nationals is now thoroughly organized and working underground."

True…there are some -these days- who do not believe the exclusion/relocation/internment of Japanese was caused by "military necessity", but in 1942 we all knew better. In addition to the broken Jap code MAGIC, the Army Intelligence AND the Navy Intelligence insisted to their respective services that all west coast Japanese be removed from the military "red zone" along our west coast. No other Japanese anywhere else in the U.S. was affected.
